Qjets are cool carbs. I have a mild 383 and I was able to break into the 13’s with a Qjet, which I am kind of proud of. Especially with 3.08 gears, and only a 2100 rpm stall. If you guys have any inclination of street driving go with the Qjet, great performance and awesome manners on the street.

SMI is really good, they answer all of my Qjet questions and I didn’t even buy the carb from them, so what does that tell you???

OK, so we did some recon this weekend, and here is what I have learned…The qJet is infinitely better than the Carter I had before. On hills that I used to stutter out on, the truck ran strong. I finally got it to stall out when I accidentally got pinned with my front up on a ridge and my rear bumper was wedged on the ground…Even then I technically stalled because my clutch lever fell off and I was still in gear. After being stuck like that for almost 15 minutes, I finally got the truck down and it started up pretty much right away.

Other interesting points. The electric choke is great and works very well, makes cold starts much easier. The transition from fast idle to normal idle works as it should.

Freeway cruising is much much better. Specifically, there is no hesitation when I mash it from cruising speed. Also, the fuel delivery seems much more linear while at cruising speed. No popping on rolling slow down.

The bad. After one particular jag, the truck dieseled pretty badly. However, I am pretty sure that it is a result of something I did during setup.

So, my conclusion is that I am very happy with this carb, although I can only compare it to the Carter that was on before and other cards I have had, not the Truck Avenger.

Dear Sean,
I would like to take a minute to Thank You for such great service. I received my carb on time and your company then express mailed the bolts and fittings, I bolted the carb up and adjusted my linkage, turned on my fuel pump, and it fired instantly. I adjusted idle mixture slightly and set the idle. My El Camino has NEVER ran this good, I’ve had this motor and trans combo in 3 other cars and it NEVER ran this good. Thank You Very Much, its a shameto cover up such a great looking carb.

Hello Sean,
I received my Qjet last friday and installation was easy, no problems at all. I fitted the pressure regulator with an in line filter between it and the carb, switched on the pump, waited a few seconds for the carb to fill up, two pumps of the pedal and it fired up instantly. Idle is now smooth and acceleration is relly strong and crisp, I just had to turn one idle jet about a quarter turn and adjust idle stop screw a little bit. It’s a completely different driver now compared to when I had the square bore holley on it.

I just thought I would follow up, as promised, with the results of my Rhoads lifter installation, and how closely matched your rochester carb was.
Before, I was getting roughly 10″ of vacuum at idle, and both you and I predicted that the Rhoads lifters should increase that by 3 or 4 inches…thus, you constructed the carb with this in mind.
Well, you nailed it with your choice of power piston spring. Before, the car was bogging and lurching with the other lifters (or 10″ of vacuum). Now it runs smooth and cruises at just above idle with no problems what-so-ever.

Good day,
I received the quadrajet carb last week and I thought I would give you some feedback on the results.
First, let me say that it?s almost a shame to cover up such a beautiful carb with a large air cleaner. High marks for appearance.
Second, the divorced choke works perfectly. I had to adjust the choke idle screw initially, but it works flawlessly.
Lastly, it runs quite noticeably better than it did before. The only thing I might need to contend with is that it does not want to cruise (just off idle)without constantly hesitating and surging. Same problem I was experiencing with the other carb (also a quadrajet).
I realize you designed and built this thing with the presence in mind that I will be installing a set of Rhoads lifters, which I am going to do next. I fully expect that this will bring the vacuum up to what you designed the carb for. I have a set of these lifters in my truck, and let me tell you that they really work.
I will let you know the result of this, for your perspective.

I wanted to let you know how happy I am with the performance of the Stage 2 Q-jet I purchased from SMI. It is better than any brand new carb I?ve ever dealt with. The only thing I adjusted was lowering idle about 100 rpm. Everything else is right on. No miss, stumble, or hesitation. It made my 383 feel alive! I?ll look forward to dealing with SMI with any future projects.
