Graduating from Southern Illinois University in 1990 with a Bachelor’s Degree in Automotive Technology, Sean Murphy relocated to southern California to attend the Racing Technology program at Chaffey College in Rancho Cucamonga ca.

Attending evening classes, Sean worked at Brad Urbans, “The Carburetor Shop”. The business expanded rapidly, with Sean achieving the position of shop manager and lead builder. The shop was supplying carburetors to teams in highest levels of NASCAR, NHRA, IHRA, IMCA, IMSA, and were a major sponsor of national muscle car association (NMCA).

Research, development, and product support allowed Sean the opportunity to take part in dynamometer and on-site track testing sessions around the country. These opportunities provided valuable hands-on knowledge of product application. The practical experience provided insight to the needs of the customer; the knowledge then used directly through product improvement and development.

In 1994, Sean accepted a position with Mike Jones Carburetion (now known as Jet Performance Fuel Systems) in Huntington Beach ca. Established in 1968; the business was a very well known and successful performance carburetor supplier during the 70’s and 80’s.

Under new ownership, the company hired Sean in an effort to reestablish a reputation as a respected source of high performance carburetors. Sean became production manager, fuel system division, and soon they were supplying carburetors to several of the largest performance automotive retail wholesalers in the nation. Sean tendered his resignation in late 2001.

SMI (Sean Murphy Induction, inc.) opened in January of 2002 with a mission to provide products of the highest quality; supported through a focused dedication to customer service.
